Student Organization Advisor Profile with Jen Pelletier
Job Title/Department/Academic Unit:
Assistant Director, The Ohio Union
What organizations do you currently advise?
American Red Cross Club, First-Year Leadership Initiative, Phi Gamma Delta, & Tri-Bacon
How did you become involved?
I started working with Fiji when they recolonized in 2003 as part of my responsibilities with the Ohio Union. With the other three organizations, I started working with them because of the students who are involved. It was through those relationships that I came to know more about each organization and wanted to provide direct support for them.
How long have you been advising the organization?
I’ve been working with Fiji for nearly seven years, with the Red Cross Club for the last two years, and with FYLI and Tri-Bacon just this year.
What is your favorite part about advising a student organization?
I love the energy that students have about topics and interests they are passionate about. On both a personal and professional level, I really enjoy supporting the leadership development of students who are making a difference on our campus and in our communities.
Tell us something exciting that's happening in your organizations!
Tri-Bacon is a new organization this year and held its first BYOBacon event this quarter. FYLI is also new this year and recruited and selected 42 great new members this fall. The Red Cross Club has a busy month in November with the annual Blood Battle leading up to the OSU-Michigan game. It’s definitely one of the biggest times of the year for the club.
Fiji is getting in shape for their annual Rivalry Run, in partnership with Pi Kappa Alpha, and their respective chapters at that school up north. They will run the game ball from Columbus to Ann Arbor as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
What advice do you have for new advisors or people thinking about advising?
Each organization needs and wants a different level of support from an advisor.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is the Long Walk on the Oval.
