New Ohio Union/Transition
Committee of 88
The new Ohio Union, opening in 2010, will tell the histories of The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio through architectural design, art, and even the food served in the building. Through this building and development process, we felt that these initiatives should be led by a special group of students who are representative of both the pride of Ohio and the pride of Ohio State. The result was the creation of the Committee of 88.
One student from each of the 88 counties in Ohio will be selected into the Committee of 88. Selected students will show their pride of their home county by representing their county in various Ohio State publications and the 2009 class will participate in a special ceremony tied to the construction of the new Ohio Union, thus securing each students’ place in history. Profiles of each student will be kept on the Ohio Union webpage to highlight each student’s achievements and interesting facts about each county in Ohio.
The inaugural class of the Committee of 88, known as the I-Beam Society, participated in the Topping Off Ceremony on May 9, 2008, a celebration of the final signed steel beam is placed at the highest point on the construction site. They have hosted University officials visiting their counties and promote pro-Ohio initiatives on campus.
