What is Community Commitment?

Volunteering just doesn't get any bigger than this.  Community Commitment is one of the largest single-day community service events on a college campus in the country!  Each year between 1200 and 1500 Buckeyes participate in this one-of-a-kind community service project.

The 2008 Community Commitment was held on Tuesday, September 23 during this past Welcome Week.  Nearly 1300 OSU Students, faculty and staff participated and served in over 100 different service agencies around the city of Columbus. The volunteer projects included outdoor clean-up, working with youth, literacy education, serving meals, office work, and a variety of other worthwhile projects.

This year the SERV Team partnered with the Office of Economic Access and the national campaign Know How to Go (www.knowhow2go.org) to teach OSU students about becoming coming access advocates for children in the Columbus area. In the morning Judge Yvette McGee Brown spoke about the importance of participating in service activities and giving back to our communities. Following her speech, and after being prepared with messages about how to get to college, the student volunteers departed to participate in about four hours of service during the day.

Meijer and Coca-Cola provide lunches and beverages for all of the participants. OSU University Catering assisted the program through provide a breakfast of bagels and juice for all of the participants.

Coming Up Next!

If you’re hoping to get involved with a similar event, be sure to stay on the lookout for MLK Day of Service 2009 on January 19 and Rock the Block in Spring on Saturday, May 2, 2009. More information about these events is coming soon!
